Janet Sayers, 'Adrian Stokes and the portrait of Melanie Klein'

Twenty years after the publication in 1932 of Melanie Klein’s portrait of the psychology of her psychoanalytic patient, Adrian Stokes, he offered to commission a portrait of her by the artist, William Coldstream. In recounting the outcome of this offer I will draw attention to similarities and differences it reveals between the psychology of psychoanalysts, portrait painters, and their subjects.
