Steven Groarke, 'Waiting as an act of hope'

What does psychoanalysis tell us about hope? The aim of this paper is to draw out the relational quality of hope, with particular reference to the ideas of Michael Balint and D. W. Winnicott. The paper begins with a brief mention of Balint’s idea of a ‘new beginning’ before presenting a more detailed discussion of ‘the moment of hope’ in Winnicott’s account of antisocial acts.
